Flood Protection and Above the Shoulders PPE

Flooding is becoming more frequent, with record peaks in events like the 2017 flood, which caused 21 record peaks compared to eight in 1982, 1993, and 2015-16 floods. Disasters like droughts, severe storms, and inland flooding have caused billions in damage, with flooding now following wildfires and impacting areas like Yellowstone National Park.

USA Disasters by State: Hazards and PPE

Flood recovery involves risks like mold and airborne dust containing harmful substances, emphasizing the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers. Occupational health and safety regulations govern proper PPE use, which may include respiratory, hearing, and head/eye/face protection, along with footwear and gloves.

Respiratory Hazards After Floods

Mold: Flooding fosters mold growth in damp environments, especially on absorbent materials like wood and fabric. Hidden mold may be found behind walls, wallpaper, furniture, or carpets. Aerosolization of mold spores during cleanup can worsen air quality.

  • Dusts Containing Asbestos, Lead, and Crystalline Silica: Demolition in older structures often releases harmful dusts, including asbestos, lead, and silica. These are commonly found in older building materials and can pose risks during debris cleanup.
  • Bioaerosols: Floodwaters often contain bacteria like E. coli and viruses such as Hepatitis A. Cleanup activities can aerosolize these pathogens, increasing exposure risks. Stagnant water also attracts mosquitoes, which spread diseases.

Respirator Selection in Flood Cleanup

Respirators must be chosen based on contaminants and regulatory guidelines. Mold remediation guidelines from agencies like the CDC include PPE recommendations. Employers must implement a respiratory protection program compliant with OSHA regulations.

  • Additional PPE Considerations

Hearing Protection: Noise from equipment like chainsaws and vacuums often exceeds safe levels (>90 dBA). Properly selected and worn hearing protection can reduce these risks effectively.

  • Head, Eye, and Face Protection: Falling debris, glass, and airborne particles make head, eye, and face protection essential. Properly fitted safety glasses or goggles can prevent most eye injuries. Helmets are vital in areas with falling objects or electrical hazards.
